[1] The book of the acts of Tobit the son of
Tobiel, son of Ananiel, son of Aduel, son of Gabael, of
the descendants of Asiel and the tribe of Naphtali,
[2] who in the days of Shalmaneser, king of the
Assyrians, was taken into captivity from Thisbe, which
is to the south of Kedesh Naphtali in Galilee above
Asher.
[3] I, Tobit, walked in the ways of truth and
righteousness all the days of my life, and I performed
many acts of charity to my brethren and countrymen who
went with me into the land of the Assyrians, to Nineveh.
[4] Now when I was in my own country, in the land
of Israel, while I was still a young man, the whole
tribe of Naphtali my forefather deserted the house of
Jerusalem. This was the place which had been chosen from
among all the tribes of Israel, where all the tribes
should sacrifice and where the temple of the dwelling of
the Most High was consecrated and established for all
generations for ever.
[5] All the tribes that joined in apostasy used
to sacrifice to the calf Baal, and so did the house of
Naphtali my forefather.
[6] But I alone went often to Jerusalem for the
feasts, as it is ordained for all Israel by an
everlasting decree. Taking the first fruits and the
tithes of my produce and the first shearings, I would
give these to the priests, the sons of Aaron, at the
altar.
[7] Of all my produce I would give a tenth to the
sons of Levi who ministered at Jerusalem; a second tenth
I would sell, and I would go and spend the proceeds each
year at Jerusalem;
[8] the third tenth I would give to those to whom
it was my duty, as Deborah my father's mother had
commanded me, for I was left an orphan by my father.
[9] When I became a man I married Anna, a member
of our family, and by her I became the father of Tobias.
[10] Now when I was carried away captive to
Nineveh, all my brethren and my relatives ate the food
of the Gentiles;
[11] but I kept myself from eating it,
[12] because I remembered God with all my heart.
[13] Then the Most High gave me favor and good
appearance in the sight of Shalmaneser, and I was his
buyer of provisions.
[14] So I used to go into Media, and once at
Rages in Media I left ten talents of silver in trust
with Gabael, the brother of Gabrias.
[15] But when Shalmaneser died, Sennacherib his
son reigned in his place; and under him the highways
were unsafe, so that I could no longer go into Media.
[16] In the days of Shalmaneser I performed many
acts of charity to my brethren.
[17] I would give my bread to the hungry and my
clothing to the naked; and if I saw any one of my people
dead and thrown out behind the wall of Nineveh, I would
bury him.
[18] And if Sennacherib the king put to death any
who came fleeing from Judea, I buried them secretly. For
in his anger he put many to death. When the bodies were
sought by the king, they were not found.
[19] Then one of the men of Nineveh went and
informed the king about me, that I was burying them; so
I hid myself. When I learned that I was being searched
for, to be put to death, I left home in fear.
[20] Then all my property was confiscated and
nothing was left to me except my wife Anna and my son
Tobias.
[21] But not fifty days passed before two of
Sennacherib's sons killed him, and they fled to the
mountains of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon, his son, reigned
in his place; and he appointed Ahikar, the son of my
brother Anael, over all the accounts of his kingdom and
over the entire administration.
[22] Ahikar interceded for me, and I returned to
Nineveh. Now Ahikar was cupbearer, keeper of the signet,
and in charge of administration of the accounts, for
Esarhaddon had appointed him second to himself. He was
my nephew.

[1]이 책은 토비트에 관한 이야기를
적은 것이다.
토비트는 납달리 지파의
아시엘,
증조부는 아두엘,
고조부는
가바엘이었다.
가바엘의 아버지는
라파엘이었고 할아버지는 라구엘이었다.
[2]토비트는 아시리아왕 살마네셀
때에 티스베라는 곳에서 살다가 포로로
잡혀 간 사람이었다.
티스베는 갈릴리 지방 납달리 케데스 남쪽에 있는 곳으로서
아세르에서는 서쪽 언덕에,
포고르에서는
북쪽에 위치한 곳이었다.
[3]나 토비트는 평생토록 진리와
정의의 길을 걸어 왔다.
나는 나와 함께
아시리아의 니느웨 지방으로 귀양살이를
간 형제들과 동포들에게 많은 자선을
베풀었다.
[4]내가 어려서 이스라엘 땅 내
고향에 살고 있을 때에 내가 속한 납달리
지파의 모든 사람이 내 조상 다윗 왕조를
배반하고 예루살렘으로부터 떨어져
나왔다.
예루살렘은 이스라엘 모든 지파가
희생제물을 드리는 유일한 장소로 선택된
곳이다.
거기에 거기에는 하느님께서
거처하실 성전이 오고오는 모든 세대를
위하여 거룩하게 따로 지어져 있었다.
[5]내 모든 형제들과 내가 속한
납달리 지파의 모든 사람은 갈릴리의
모든 산에서 이스라엘 왕 여로보암이
단에서 만든 송아지 우상에게 희생제물을
드리곤 하였다.
[6]그러나 나만은 이스라엘 모든
사람이 받은 영원한 법전에 기록되어 있는
대로 명절마다 예루살렘으로 올라 갔다.
그 때마다 나는 밭곡식의 첫수확과 가축의
맏배와 수입의 십분의 일과 처음 깎은
양털을 가지고 예루살렘으로 급히 올라
가서
[7]아론의 후예인 사제들에게 주어
제단에 바치게 하였다.
그리고 밀과
포도주와 올리브 기름과 석류와 무화과와
그 밖에 다른 과일들의 십분의 일을
예루살렘 성전에서 봉사하고 있는 레위
지파 사람들에게 주었다.
또 안식년을
제외한 육 년 동안 해마다 또 다른 십분의
일을 팔아 돈으로 바꾸어 가지고
예루살렘에 가서 비용으로 썼다.
[8]고아와 과부와 이방인으로서
유다교로 개종하고 이스라엘 사람들과
함께 사는 사람들에게는 재산의 십분의
일을 나누어 주었다.
삼 년마다 나는 그
선물을 그들에게 가지고 가서 모세의
율법서에 제정된 대로,
또 우리 할아버지
하나니엘의 어머니 드보라가 명령한 대로
그들과 함께 먹었다.
내 아버지는 일찍
돌아가시고 나는 고아로 남게 되었던
것이다.
[9]나는 장성하여 우리 가문에서
아내를 맞아 아들을 낳고 그의 이름을
토비아라고 불렀다.
[10]내가 포로가 되어 아시리아로
귀양을 가서 니느웨성으로 끌려 갔을 때에
내 형제들과 동족들은 모두 이방인의
음식을 먹었다.
[11]그러나 나는 단호하게 그런
음식을 먹지 않았다.
[12]이렇게 내가 마음을 다하여
하느님을 섬겼기 때문에
[13]지극히 높으신 하느님께서 나로
하여금 살마네셀왕의 총애와 귀여움을
받게 해 주셨다.
그래서 나는 왕에게
필요한 물건을 사 들이는 벼슬을 맡게
되었다.
[14]왕이 죽을 때까지 나는 자주
메대에 가서 왕에게 필요한 물건들을
사오곤 하였다.
그 때에 나는 메대 지방에
살고 있는 내 친척 가브리의 아들
가바엘에게 은 십 달란트가 든 자루를
맡겼다.
[15]살마네셀이 죽고 그의 아들
산헤립이 왕위를 물려 받았을 때에 메대로
가는 길이 차단되어 있어서 나는 그리로
갈 수가 없었다.
[16]살마네셀왕 때에 나는 내
형제들과 동족을 위하여 자선사업을 많이
하였다.
[17]배고픈 사람들에게는 먹을 것을
주었고 헐벗은 사람들에게는 입을 것을
주었으며 내 동족 가운데 어떤 사람이
죽어서 니느웨성 밖에 버려져 있는 것을
보게 되면 그것을 묻어 주었다.
[18]산헤립왕이 유다를 침공했을 때
하느님을 모독했기 때문에 하늘의 왕이신
하느님께서 그에게 벌을 내리신 일이
있었는데 그는 유다로부터 도망쳐 나와서
홧김에 이스라엘 사람들을 닥치는 대로
죽였다.
그래서 나는 그들의 시체를 묻어
주었다.
내가 그들의 시체를 훔쳐다가
묻어 주었기 때문에 산헤립왕은 그 시체를
찾아 보았지만 찾아 낼 수가 없었다.
[19]그 때 어떤 니느웨 시민이 왕에게
가서 내가 그 시체들을 묻어 주었다는
정보를 제공하였다.
그래서 나는 몸을
숨겼다.
왕이 내 비밀을 다 알고 있다는
것과 나를 잡아 죽이려고 한다는 소식을
들었을 때에 나는 무서워서 도망쳐 버리고
[20]그러자 내 모든 재산은 몰수를
당하여 왕의 재산이 되었고 나에게 남은
것이라고는 나의 처 안나와 아들 토비아
외에는 아무 것도 없었다.
[21]그 후 사십 일도 못 되어서 왕의
두 아들이 왕을 죽이고 아라랏 산으로
도망쳐 버렸다.
왕의 뒤를 이어 왕자
에살하똔이 왕위에 오르고,
나의 동생인
아나엘의 아들 아히칼에게 나라의 재정이
맡겨졌다.
그래서 아히칼은 모든 행정의
책임을 맡게 되었다.
[22]그 후 아히칼은 나를 위하여
왕에게 특청을 드렸으므로 나는 니느웨로
돌아 왔다.
아히칼은 산헤립왕 때에
수라상을 주관하고 옥새를 보관하고 모든
행정 재무를 맡아 보던 사람이었다.
에살하똔은 아히칼을 그대로 그 자리에
다시 임명하였던 것이다.
그런데 아히칼은
나의 가까운 친척,
즉 조카였다.

[1] When I arrived home and my wife Anna and my
son Tobias were restored to me, at the feast of
Pentecost, which is the sacred festival of the seven
weeks, a good dinner was prepared for me and I sat down
to eat.
[2] Upon seeing the abundance of food I said to
my son, "Go and bring whatever poor man of our
brethren you may find who is mindful of the Lord, and I
will wait for you."
[3] But he came back and said, "Father, one
of our people has been strangled and thrown into the
market place."
[4] So before I tasted anything I sprang up and
removed the body to a place of shelter until sunset.
[5] And when I returned I washed myself and ate
my food in sorrow.
[6] Then I remembered the prophecy of Amos, how
he said, "Your feasts shall be turned into
mourning, and all your festivities into
lamentation." And I wept.
[7] When the sun had set I went and dug a grave
and buried the body.
[8] And my neighbors laughed at me and said,
"He is no longer afraid that he will be put to
death for doing this; he once ran away, and here he is
burying the dead again!"
[9] On the same night I returned from burying
him, and because I was defiled I slept by the wall of
the courtyard, and my face was uncovered.
[10] I did not know that there were sparrows on
the wall and their fresh droppings fell into my open
eyes and white films formed on my eyes. I went to
physicians, but they did not help me. Ahikar, however,
took care of me until he went to Elymais.
[11] Then my wife Anna earned money at women's
work.
[12] She used to send the product to the owners.
Once when they paid her wages, they also gave her a kid;
[13] and when she returned to me it began to
bleat. So I said to her, "Where did you get the
kid? It is not stolen, is it? Return it to the owners;
for it is not right to eat what is stolen."
[14] And she said, "It was given to me as a
gift in addition to my wages." But I did not
believe her, and told her to return it to the owners;
and I blushed for her. Then she replied to me,
"Where are your charities and your righteous deeds?
You seem to know everything!"

장
[1]에살하똔 왕 대에 나는 집으로
돌아 와 내 아내 안나와 아들 토비아를
되찾게 되었다.
과월절로부터 칠 주간
후에 거룩하게 지키는 우리의 명절 즉
오순절에 나를 위하여 큰 잔치가 베풀어져
나는 그 자리에 가 앉았다.
[2]내 앞에 있는 식탁에는 여러 가지
음식이 즐비하게 놓여져 있었다.
그 대에
나는 아들 토비아에게 이렇게 말하였다.
"얘야,
니느웨에 잡혀 온 우리 동포
중에 진심으로 하느님을 공경하는 가난한
사람이 있을 터이니 가서 찾아 내어
이리로 데려 오너라.
그러면 내가 그와
함께 이 음식을 나누도록 하겠다.
네가
돌아 올 때까지 기다리마."
[3]토비아는 이 말을 듣고 우리 동포
중에 가난한 사람을 찾으러 나갔다가
황급히 돌아 와서 "아버지!"
하고
소리를 질렀다. "무순 일이냐?"
하고 묻자 그가 대답하였다."아버지,
우리 동포 한 사람이 살해되었습니다."
[4]이 말을 듣고 나는 음식에 손도
대지 않고 벌떡 일어나 뛰쳐 나갔다.
그리고 큰 거리에서 그 시체를 들어다
어떤 헛간에 감추어 두었다.
해가 진 후에
그 시체를 매장할 생각이었다.
[5]이렇게 시체를 감추어 둔 다음
집에 돌아 와서 몸을 깨끗이 씻고 슬픔에
싸인 채 음식을 먹었다.
[6]나는 예언자 아모스의 말이
생각나서 울었다.
일찌기 아모스는 베델을
두고 이렇게 말하였던 것이다. "너희의
잔치는 변하여 울음바다가 되고 너희의
모든 노래는 변하여 통곡이 될 것이다."
[7]해가 진 후에 나는 나가서 무덤을
파고 그 시체를 묻었다.
[8]이웃 사람들은 나를 비웃으며
이렇게 말하였다. "이 사람은
지난번에도 이런 일 때문에 사형감으로
수배되어 도망을 갔는데 이제 또다시 죽은
사람을 묻어 주다니,
겁이고 뭐고 다
없어진 모양이지?"
[9]그 날 밤 나는 몸을 깨끗이 씻고 뜰
안으로 들어 가 담 옆에 누워서 잠을 잤다.
너무나도 더워서 얼굴을 가리지 않았다.
[10]내 옆에 있는 담 위에 참새들이
있는 것을 나는 몰랐다.
그 때에 뜨거운
참새 똥이 바로 내 눈에 떨어져서 내 양쪽
눈에는 흰막이 생기게 되었다.
나는
의사를 찾아 가 치료를 해 보았지만 약을
아무리 발라도 소용이 없었고 내 눈은 그
시력이 약해져서 마침내는 시력을 완전히
잃고 말았다.
이렇게 눈이 먼 채 사 년을
지냈다.
내 모든 친족이 나 때문에
슬퍼하였고 아히칼은 자기가
엘리마이스로 갈 때까지 이 년 동안나를
돌보아 주었다.
[12]내 아내는 자기가 일하여 만든
물건을 주인들에게 갖다 주고 삯을 받곤
하였다.
디스크로스월 즉 삼월 칠일 내
아내는 자기가짠 베를 끊어 가지고 그
주인에게 갖다 주었다.
그랬더니 주인은
삯을 다 지불할 뿐 아니라 자기 염소 중에
새끼 염소 한마리를 주면서 잡아 먹으라고
하였다.
[13]내 아내가 집으로 돌아 올 대 그
새끼 염소가 울기 시작하였다.
그래서
나는 아내를 불러 이렇게 말하였다. "이
새끼 염소는 어디서 난 거요?
혹 훔친 것은
아니오?
어서 그놈을 주인에게 돌려
주시오.
우리에게는 남의 것을 훔쳐 없소."
[14]그러나 내 아내는 "이것은
품삯에다 덤으로 얹어 받은 것입니다."
하고 대답하였다.
그래도 나는 아내를
믿지 못하여 그 염소 새끼를 돌려 주라고
재촉하며 이 일로 인해서 아내를 향하여
얼굴을 붉혔다.
그러자 내 아내는 "당신이
베푼 자선으로 얻은 것은 무엇입니까?
당신이 지금 이꼴이 되었다는 것을 모르는
사람은 없습니다."
하고 말했다.

[1] Then in my grief I wept, and I prayed in
anguish, saying,
[2] "Righteous art thou, O Lord; all thy
deeds and all they ways are mercy and truth, and thou
dost render true and righteous judgment for ever.
[3] Remember me and look favorably upon me; do
not punish me for my sins and for my unwitting offences
and those which my fathers committed before thee.
[4] For they disobeyed thy commandments, and thou
gavest us over to plunder, captivity, and death; thou
madest us a byword of reproach in all the nations among
which we have been dispersed.
[5] And now thy many judgments are true in
exacting penalty from me for my sins and those of my
fathers, because we did not keep thy commandments. For
we did not walk in truth before thee.
[6] And now deal with me according to thy
pleasure; command my spirit to be taken up, that I may
depart and become dust. For it is better for me to die
than to live, because I have heard false reproaches, and
great is the sorrow within me. Command that I now be
released from my distress to go to the eternal abode; do
not turn thy face away from me."
[7] On the same day, at Ecbatana in Media, it
also happened that Sarah, the daughter of Raguel, was
reproached by her father's maids,
[8] because she had been given to seven husbands,
and the evil demon Asmodeus had slain each of them
before he had been with her as his wife. So the maids
said to her, "Do you not know that you strangle
your husbands? You already have had seven and have had
no benefit from any of them.
[9] Why do you beat us? If they are dead, go with
them! May we never see a son or daughter of yours!"
[10] When she heard these things she was deeply
grieved, even to the thought of hanging herself. But she
said, "I am the only child of my father; if I do
this, it will be a disgrace to him, and I shall bring
his old age down in sorrow to the grave.
[11] So she prayed by her window and said,
"Blessed art thou, O Lord my God, and blessed is
thy holy and honored name for ever. May all thy works
praise thee for ever.
[12] And now, O Lord, I have turned my eyes and
my face toward thee.
[13] Command that I be released from the earth
and that I hear reproach no more.
[14] Thou knowest, O Lord, that I am innocent of
any sin with man,
[15] and that I did not stain my name or the name
of my father in the land of my captivity. I am my
father's only child, and he has no child to be his heir,
no near kinsman or kinsman's son for whom I should keep
myself as wife. Already seven husbands of mine are dead.
Why should I live? But if it be not pleasing to thee to
take my life, command that respect be shown to me and
pity be taken upon me, and that I hear reproach no
more."
[16] The prayer of both was heard in the presence
of the glory of the great God.
[17] And Raphael was sent to heal the two of
them: to scale away the white films of Tobit's eyes; to
give Sarah the daughter of Raguel in marriage to Tobias
the son of Tobit, and to bind Asmodeus the evil demon,
because Tobias was entitled to possess her. At that very
moment Tobit returned and entered his house and Sarah
the daughter of Raguel came down from her upper room.

장
[1]나는 마음이 몹시 괴로와 신음을
하며 크게 울었다.
그리고 흐느끼면서
이렇게 기도하였다.
[2]"주님,
주님은 올바르십니다.
주님이 하신 모든 일은 올바르며 주님은
모든 일을 자비롭고 참되게 하십니다.
주님은 이 세상을 심판하시는 분이십니다.
[3]주님,
나를 기억하시고 나를
돌보아 주소서.
내 죄를 벌하지 마시고
나와 내 조상이 알지 못하고 주님께
저지른 죄를 벌하지 마소서
[4]우리는 주님의 계명을 어겼습니다.
그래서 주님은 우리를 내주시어 약탈과
추방과 죽음을 당하게 하셨습니다.
우리는
만방에 흩어져서 모든 사람의
이야깃거리와 조롱거리가 되었습니다.
[5]우리는 주님의 계명을 지키지
않았고 주님 앞에서 참되게 살지
못했습니다.
이러한 죄인들에게 내리시는
주님의 갖가지 심판은 모두 참되십니다.
[6]이제 주님이 원하시는 대로 나를
처치하시고 명령을 내리시어 내 영혼을
나에게서 떠나게 하소서.
그러면 나는 이
땅에서 떠나 흙으로 돌아 갈 것입니다.
나에게는 당치 않은 조롱이 들려 오고
많은 슬픔이 나를 짓누르고 있으니 사는
것보다 죽는 것이 오히려 낫습니다.
주님,
이 고뇌에서 나를 벗어나게 해 주시고
영원한 곳으로 나를 보내 주소서.
살아서
이 많은 고뇌를 겪는 것보다는 차라리
죽어서 이 조롱을 듣지 않는 편이
낫겠습니다."
[7]바로 그 날 메대의 엑바타나에
살고 있던 라구엘의 따 사라도 자기
아버지의 여종 한 사람에게서 조롱하는
소리를 듣게 되었다.
[8]사라는 일곱 번이나 결혼을
하였지만 사라가 그들과 부부관계도 맺기
전에 아스모데오라는 악한 귀신이 그
남편들을 번번이 죽여 버렸다.
그래서 그
여종이 사라에게 이렇게 말하였던 것이다.
"당신 남편을 죽인 사람은 바로 당신
자신이오.
당신은 이미 일곱 번이나
결혼을 했지만 제대로 결혼 생활을 한
일은 한 번도 없습니다.
[9]당신 남편들이 죽었으면 죽었지 왜
우리를 때리지요?
당신도 그들을 따라
죽어 버리시오.
그러면 우리는 당신의
아들이나 딸의 꼴을 영 보지 않아도 될
테니까요."
[10]그 날 사라는 마음이 몹시 슬퍼서
눈물을 흘리며 자기 아버지의 집 이층으로
올라가 목을 매려고 하였다.
그러다가
생각을 고쳐 먹고 혼자서 이렇게 말하였다.
"이러다가는 사람들이 내 아버지를
조롱하면서 '당신의 자식이라고는 딸
하나밖에 없는데 그 애가 괴로움을 참다
못해 목을 매고 말았구료'
하고
말할것이다.
그러면 나 때문에 연로하신
아버지께서 슬퍼서 돌아가시게 될 것이다.
나 스스로 목을 매는 것보다 주님께
간구하여 내 목숨을 거두어 가시도록 하는
편이 낫겠다.
그러면 이런 조롱을 더 듣지
않아도 되겠지."
[11]그 때 사라는 창문을 향하여 자기
양팔을 벌리고 이렇게 기도하였다. "자비로우신
하느님,
찬미를 받으소서!
주님의
이름으로 하여금 영원히 찬미받게 하소서.
주님이 하시는 모든 일을 통해서 영원한
찬미를 받으소서.
[12]지금 나는 얼굴을 들어 주님을
우러러 뵈옵니다.
[13]주님,
명령을 내리시어 나를 이
땅에서 떠나게 하시고 다시는 이런 조롱을
듣지 않게 하소서.
[14]주님,
주님이 아시는 대로 나는
남자에게서 조금도 더럽혀지지 않은
순결한 여자입니다.
[15]내가 귀양살이하는 이 땅에서 내
이름이나 내 아버지의 이름을 더럽힌 일이
없습니다.
나는 내 내 아버지의 외딸이며
나밖에는 대를 이을 자식이 없습니다.
나를 아내로 맞아 줄 가까운 형제나
친척도 없습니다.
나는 이미 남편을
일곱이나 잃었습니다.
더 살아
무엇하겠습니까?
내 목숨을 거두어 가시는
것이 주님의 뜻이 아니라면 이 하소연을
들어 주소서."
[16]바로 그 때 토비트와 사라의
기도가 영광스러운 하느님 앞에
도달하였다.
[17]그래서 하느님께서는 라파엘을
보내시며 그 두 사람의 고민을 풀어 주게
하셨다.
즉 토비트에게는 그의 눈에서
흰막을 벗겨 내어 그 눈으로 하느님의
빛을 다시 보게 하시려는 것이었고,
라구엘의 딸 사라에게는 그에게 붙어 있던
악한 귀신 아스모데오를 쫓아 내고
토비트의 아들 토비아의 아내가 되게
해주시려는 것이었다.
사라를 차지하고
싶어하는 사람이 많았지만 누구보다도
토비아가 그 자격을 갖추고 있었던 것이다.
토비트가 뜰에서 집으로 들어 간 바로 그
순간에 라구엘의 딸 사라도 이층에서
내려왔다.

[1] On that day Tobit remembered the money which
he had left in trust with Gabael at Rages in Media, and
he said to himself;
[2] "I have asked for death. Why do I not
call my son Tobias so that I may explain to him about
the money before I die?"
[3] So he called him and said, "My son, when
I die, bury me, and do not neglect your mother. Honor
her all the days of your life; do what is pleasing to
her, and do not grieve her.
[4] Remember, my son, that she faced many dangers
for you while you were yet unborn. When she dies bury
her beside me in the same grave.
[5] "Remember the Lord our God all your
days, my son, and refuse to sin or to transgress his
commandments. Live uprightly all the days of your life,
and do not walk in the ways of wrongdoing.
[6] For if you do what is true, your ways will
prosper through your deeds.
[7] Give alms from your possessions to all who
live uprightly, and do not let your eye begrudge the
gift when you make it. Do not turn your face away from
any poor man, and the face of God will not be turned
away from you.
[8] If you have many possessions, make your gift
from them in proportion; if few, do not be afraid to
give according to the little you have.
[9] So you will be laying up a good treasure for
yourself against the day of necessity.
[10] For charity delivers from death and keeps
you from entering the darkness;
[11] and for all who practice it charity is an
excellent offering in the presence of the Most High.
[12] "Beware, my son, of all immorality.
First of all take a wife from among the descendants of
your fathers and do not marry a foreign woman, who is
not of your father's tribe; for we are the sons of the
prophets. Remember, my son, that Noah, Abraham, Isaac,
and Jacob, our fathers of old, all took wives from among
their brethren. They were blessed in their children, and
their posterity will inherit the land.
[13] So now, my son, love your brethren, and in
your heart do not disdain your brethren and the sons and
daughters of your people by refusing to take a wife for
yourself from among them. For in pride there is ruin and
great confusion; and in shiftlessness there is loss and
great want, because shiftlessness is the mother of
famine.
[14] Do not hold over till the next day the wages
of any man who works for you, but pay him at once; and
if you serve God you will receive payment. "Watch
yourself, my son, in everything you do, and be
disciplined in all your conduct.
[15] And what you hate, do not do to any one. Do
not drink wine to excess or let drunkenness go with you
on your way.
[16] Give of your bread to the hungry, and of
your clothing to the naked. Give all your surplus to
charity, and do not let your eye begrudge the gift when
you made it.
[17] Place your bread on the grave of the
righteous, but give none to sinners.
[18] Seek advice from every wise man, and do not
despise any useful counsel.
[19] Bless the Lord God on every occasion; ask
him that your ways may be made straight and that all
your paths and plans may prosper. For none of the
nations has understanding; but the Lord himself gives
all good things, and according to his will he humbles
whomever he wishes. "So, my son, remember my
commands, and do not let them be blotted out of your
mind.
[20] And now let me explain to you about the ten
talents of silver which I left in trust with Gabael the
son of Gabrias at Rages in Media.
[21] Do not be afraid, my son, because we have
become poor. You have great wealth if you fear God and
refrain from every sin and do what is pleasing in his
sight."

[1]그 날 토비트는 자기가 전에
메대의 라게스에 사는 가바엘에게 돈을
맡겨 두었던 일이 머리에 떠올라서,
[2]"내가 죽음을 간청하였으니
죽기 전에 아들 토비아를 불러 이 돈
이야기를 해 두어야 하지 않을까?"
하고 생각하였다.
[3]그래서 그는 토비아를 불러 이렇게
말했다. "내가 죽거든 잘 묻어 다오.
그리고 네 어머니를 소홀히 대하지 말고
평생토록 존경하며 그 마음에 드는 일만
해 드려라.
어머니 마음을 슬프게 해서는
안 된다.
[4]네가 태중에 있을 때 네 어머니가
너 때문에 얼마나 많은 어려움을 겪었을까
생각해 보아라.
네 어머니가 죽거든 같은
무덤에 나와 나란히 묻어 다오
[5]얘야,
너는 일생 동안 우리 주
하느님을 기억하고 죄를 짓거나 하느님의
계명을 어기려고 하지 말아라.
너는
평생토록 옳은 일을 행하고 옳지 않은
길은 걷지 말아라.
[6]네가 진리를 따르기만 한다면 무슨
일을 하든지 성공할 것이다.
[7]옳은 일을 행하는 모든 사람에게,
너에게 있는 것으로 자선을 베풀어라.
자선을 베풀 때에는 아까와하는 마음을
갖지 말아라.
가난한 사람을 만나거든
그가 누구든지 외면하지 말아라.
그러면
하느님께서도 너에게서 얼굴을 돌리시는
일이 결코 없을 것이다.
[8]네 재산 정도에 맞게 힘 닿는
데까지 자선을 베풀어라.
네가 가진 것이
적더라도 주저하지 말고 적은 대로 자선을
베풀어라.
[9]이렇게 하는 것은 네가 곤경을
당하게 되는 날을 대비하여 좋은 보물을
쌓아 두는 일이 된다.
[10]자선은 자선을 베푸는 사람을
죽음에서 건져 내고 암흑에 빠지지 않게
해 주는 것이다.
[11]누구든지 자선을 베풀면 그
자선은 지극히 높으신 하느님께 바치는
좋은 예물이 된다.
[12]얘야,
모든 음란한 일을 피하여라.
무엇보다도 네 조상의 가문에서 네 아내를
택하여라.
네 아버지의 부족에 속하지
않은 이방인 여자를 아내로 택하지 말아라.
우리는 예언자들의 후손이다.
얘야,
우리의 옛 조상 노아와 아브라함과
이사악과 야곱을 생각해 보아라.
그들은
모두 자기들의 친족 가운데서 아내를
얻었고 축복을 받아 그들의 자녀를 낳았다.
이제 그들의 후손이 이 땅을 차지할
것이다.
[13]얘야,
네 친족을 사랑하여라.
네
친족에 대하여나 네 동포의 자녀들에
대하여 교만한 마음을 품지 말아라.
너는
그들 중에서 네 아내를 택해야 한다.
교만은 파멸과 많은 혼란을 가져오는
법이다.
태만은 집안을 망치고 큰 가난을
몰고 온다.
태만은 기근의 어미다.
[14]너를 위하여 일해 준 사람이
누구든지간에 그의 품삯을 당장에
치러주고 다음라까지 미루지 말아라.
네가
하느님을 섬기면 하느님께서 너에게 갚아
주실 것이다.
얘야,
무슨 일을 하든지
조심해서 하고,
네 모든 몸가짐을
신중하게 하여라.
[15]네가 싫어하는 일은 아무에게도
행하지 말아라.
포도주를 취하도록 마시지
말고 술에 취하는 버릇을 갖지 않도록
하여라.
[16]굶주린 사람에게 네 양식을
나누어 주고 헐벗은 사람에게 네 의복을
나누어 주어라.
필요 이상의 물건이
너에게 있거든 그것으로 남을 구제하고
남을 구제할 때에는 아까운 마음을 품지
말아라.
[17]하느님의 법대로 살다가 죽은
사람의 장례식을 치를 때에는 네 음식을
아낌없이 제공해 주어라.
[18]지혜로운 사람이 있거든 그에게서
조언을 구하고 너에게 도움이 될 만한
조언은 무엇이든지 소홀히 여기지 말아라.
[19]언제나 주 하느님을 찬양하고
네가 가는 길을 평탄케 해 주시기를
간구하여라.
그러면 네가 어디를 가든지,
무엇을 하든지 성공할 것이다.
어느
민족이나 친히 온갖 좋은 것들을 베풀어
주신다.
주께서 원하시지 않는 민족은
여지없이 멸망시키신다.
그러니 얘야,
내
훈계를 네 마음에 새기고 너에게서 떠나
가지 않도록 하여라.
[20]내가 전에 메대의 라게스에 사는
가브리의 아들 가바엘에게 은 십달란트를
맡겨 둔 일이 있으니 너도 알아 두어라.
[21]네가 하느님을 두려워하고 모든
죄악을 멀리하며 하느님께서 기뻐하시는
일을 행한다면 너는 부유하게 될 것이다."

[1] Then Tobias answered him, "Father, I
will do everything that you have commanded me;
[2] but how can I obtain the money when I do not
know the man?"
[3] Then Tobit gave him the receipt, and said to
him, "Find a man to go with you and I will pay him
wages as long as I live; and go and get the money."
[4] So he went to look for a man; and he found
Raphael, who was an angel,
[5] but Tobias did not know it. Tobias said to
him, "Can you go with me to Rages in Media? Are you
acquainted with that region?"
[6] The angel replied, "I will go with you;
I am familiar with the way, and I have stayed with our
brother Gabael."
[7] Then Tobias said to him, "Wait for me,
and I shall tell my father."
[8] And he said to him, "Go, and do not
delay." So he went in and said to his father,
"I have found some one to go with me." He
said, "Call him to me, so that I may learn to what
tribe he belongs, and whether he is a reliable man to go
with you."
[9] So Tobias invited him in; he entered and they
greeted each other.
[10] Then Tobit said to him, "My brother, to
what tribe and family do you belong? Tell me. "
[11] But he answered, "Are you looking for a
tribe and a family or for a man whom you will pay to go
with your son?" And Tobit said to him, "I
should like to know, my brother, your people and your
name."
[12] He replied, "I am Azarias the son of
the great Ananias, one of your relatives."
[13] Then Tobit said to him, "You are
welcome, my brother. Do not be angry with me because I
tried to learn your tribe and family. You are a relative
of mine, of a good and noble lineage. For I used to know
Ananias and Jathan, the sons of the great Shemaiah, when
we went together to Jerusalem to worship and offered the
first-born of our flocks and the tithes of our produce.
They did not go astray in the error of our brethren. My
brother, you come of good stock.
[14] But tell me, what wages am I to pay you -- a
drachma a day, and expenses for yourself as for my son?
[15] And besides, I will add to your wages if you
both return safe and sound." So they agreed to
these terms.
[16] Then he said to Tobias, "Get ready for
the journey, and good success to you both." So his
son made the preparations for the journey. And his
father said to him, "Go with this man; God who
dwells in heaven will prosper your way, and may his
angel attend you." So they both went out and
departed, and the young man's dog was with them.
[17] But Anna, his mother, began to weep, and
said to Tobit, "Why have you sent our child away?
Is he not the staff of our hands as he goes in and out
before us?
[18] Do not add money to money, but consider it
as rubbish as compared to our child.
[19] For the life that is given to us by the Lord
is enough for us."
[20] And Tobit said to her, "Do not worry,
my sister; he will return safe and sound, and your eyes
will see him.
[21] For a good angel will go with him; his
journey will be successful, and he will come back safe
and sound." Tob 5:[22] So she stopped weeping.

[1]그 때 토비아는 아버지 토비트에게
이렇게 대답하였다. "아버지,
아버지께서 일러 주신 모든 일을 다
행하겠습니다.
[2]그렇지만 가바엘이 저를 모르고
저도 그를 모르는데 어떻게 그에게서 돈을
받을 수가 있겠습니까?
제가 그에게서 그
돈을 받으려면 내가 누구라는 것을 알리고
저를 믿게 하여야 할 터인데 무슨 증거를
그에게 보여 주어야 하겠습니까?
저는
메대로 가는 길도 모릅니다."
[3]토비트는 자기 아들 토비아에게
이렇게 일러 주었다. "전에 가바엘과
나는 증서를 만들어서 각각 서명을 한 후
그것을 두 조각으로 찢어서 하나는 내가
그 돈을 간직하고 다른 하나는 돈과 함께
그에게 맡겨 두었다.
내가 그 돈을 맞긴
지가 이십년 이나 되었다.
얘야,
네가 믿을
만한 사람을 하나 구해 가지고 가바엘에게
함께 가서 돈을 받아 오도록 하여라.
함께
갔던 사람에게는,
네가 돌아 온 후에
보수를 주도록 하자."
[4]토비아는 밖으로 나가서 메대로
가는 길을 잘 알 뿐만 아니라 자기와 함께
가 줄 사람을 찾아 보았다.
그러던 중 그는
천사 라파엘을 만났는데 자기 앞에 서
있는 그가 하느님의 천사인 줄은 몰랐다.
[5]토비아가 라파엘에게, "당신은
어디서 오셨습니까?"
하고 묻자 "나는
당신의 동족 이스라엘 사람으로서 여기
일자리를 찾아 왔습니다."
하고
라파엘이 대답하였다.
토비아가 다시 "당신은
메대로 가는 길을 잘 아십니까?"
하고
묻자,
[6]라파엘은 이렇게 대답하였다. "알고말고요.
거기 여러 번 가 보았습니다.
그리로 가는
길이라면 안 가 본 길이 없어서 모두 다잘
알고 있습니다.
그 곳 라게스에 사는 우리
동족 가바엘의 집에서 묵곤 했지요.
라게스는 산골 동네이기 때문에 엑바타나
에서 라게스까지 가려면 꼬박 이틀이
걸립니다."
[7]토비아는 라파엘에게 이렇게
말하였다. "좀 기다려 주십시오.
집으로 들어 가 아버지께 여쭙고
나오겠습니다.
당신은 나와 함께 꼭 가
주셔야 하겠습니다.
거기에 대한 보수는
물론 드리지요."
[8]그 때에 천사가 "예,
기다리지요.
지체하지만 마십시오"
하고 말하였다.
[9]토비아는 집으로 들어 가서 아버지
토비트에게 보고하였다. "우리
이스라엘 동족 한 사람을 만났습니다."
그러자 토비트가 "얘야,
그 사람을
불러 오너라.
그 사람이 어느 집안과 어떤
지파에 속하는지 들어 보고 네가 믿고
데리고 갈 만한 알아 봐야겠다"
하고
말하였다.
토비아는 밖으로 나가서
라파엘을 부르며 "여보시오,
제
아버지께서 당신을 부르십니다"
하고
말하였다.
[10]라파엘이 그 집에 들어 가자
토비트가 먼저 인사하였다. "기쁨이
충만하시기를 빕니다."
하고 라파엘이
답례를 하자 토비트가 이렇게 말하였다.
"내가 이제 무엇을 가지고 기뻐하겠
습니까?
나는 눈이 먼 사람으로서 하늘의
빛을 보지 못하고 빛을 보지 못하는 죽은
자처럼 암흑 속에 잠겨 있습니다.
나는
살아 있으나 죽은 사람이나 다름 없습니다.
사람의 말 소리는 들어도 그들의 얼굴은
보지못합니다."
그러자 라파엘이 "기운을
내십시오 멀지 않아 하느님께서 당신을
고쳐 주실 것입니다.
어서 기운 을
내십시오"
하고 격려 하였다.
토비트는
"내 아들 토비아가 메대로 가려고
하는데 당신이 함께 가며 그의 길을
인도해 줄 수 있겠습니까?
보수는
드리겠습니다."
하고 청하였다.
라파엘이 대답하였다. "예,
함께 갈 수
있습니다.
나는 모든 길을 잘 알고
있습니다.
메대에는 여러번 가 보았고 그
곳 들과 산을 두루 다녀 보았기 때문에
어느 길이고 모르는 길이 없습니다."
[11]"당신은 어느 지파,
어느
가문에 속합니까?
나에게 말해 주시오."
하고 토비트가 청하자,
[12]라파엘은 "내 출신 지파는
알아서 무엇하시겠습니까?"
하고
대답하였다.
토비트가 다시 "당신이
정말 누구인지,
이름이 무엇인지 알고
싶습니다"
하자,
[13]"나는 당신의 동족인 위대한
아나니아의 아들 아자리아입니다"
하고 라파엘이 대답하였다.
[14]이 말을 듣고 토비트가 말하였다.
"참 잘 오셨습니다.
하느님의 축복을
받으시기 바랍니다.
내가 당신의 가문에
대해서 캐물은 것을 섭섭하게 생각하지
마십시오.
알고 보니 당신은 나의 동족일
뿐 아니라 훌륭하고 좋은 집안에
태어나셨군요.
나는 스마야의 두 아들
아나니아와 나단을 전부터 알고있습니다.
그 들은 나와 함께 예루살렘으로 올라
가서 같이 예배를 드리곤 했지요.
그들은
한번도 탈선한 일이 없는 좋은
사람들입니다.
당신은 정말 훌륭한
집안에서 태어났군요.
이렇게 오셔서
반갑습니다."
[15]토비트는 계속하여 말하였다.
"나는 당신에게 하루 한 드라크마를
보수로 드리겠습니다.
그리고 내 아들에게
주는 여비와 같은 액수의 여비를
드리겠습니다.
내 아들을 데리고 갔다
오십시오.
[16]그러면 정한 보수 외에도 좀더
생각해 드리겠습니다."
라파엘이
대답하였다. "내가 그를 데리고 함께
갔다 오겠습니다.
그 여행길은 안전하니
염려하지 마십시오.
잘 d갔다가 무사히
돌아 오겠습니다."
[17]토비트는 "여행 중에 하느님의
축복이 있기를 바랍니다"
하고
라파엘에게 말한 다음 자기 아들을 불러서
"얘야,
길 떠날 채비를 하고 네 동족인
이분과 함께 떠나거라.
하늘에 계신
하느님께서 여행길에 너희를 보호해
주시고 무사히 돌아 해 주시기를 빈다.
하느님의 천사가 너와 동행하며 지켜
주시기를 빈다"
하고 말하였다.
토비아는 길을 떠나면서 자기 아버지와
어머니에게 입을 맞추었다.
토비트가
토비아에게 "몸 성히 갔다 오너라"
하고 말하였다.
[18]그 때 토비아의 어머니는 울음을
터뜨리며, "어쩌자고 내 아이를
보냅니까?
그애는 늘 우리와 함께
있으면서 우리의 지팡이 구실을 하지
않아요?
[19]돈은 더 해서 무엇해요?
그 돈
때문에 우리 아이를 희생시킬 수야 없지
않아요?
[20]주님께서 우리에게 주신 것만큼만
가지고 살면 그것으로 충분합니다."
하고 말했다.
[21]토비트는 자기 아내에게 이렇게
대답하였다. "조금도 염려하지 말아요.
우리 아이는 잘 갔다가 무사히 돌아 올
테니까.
그 애가 당신 곁으로 무사히 돌아
오는 날을 당신 눈으로 직접 보게 될
것이오.
[22]그러니 여보,
염려하지 말아요.
이
두 사람 때문에 걱정할 것은 조금도 없소.
선한 천사가 토비아와 동행할 테니,
이
애는 여행을 잘 끝마치고 무사히 돌아 올
것이오."

[1] Now as they proceeded on their way they came
at evening to the Tigris river and camped there.
[2] Then the young man went down to wash himself.
A fish leaped up from the river and would have swallowed
the young man;
[3] and the angel said to him, "Catch the
fish." So the young man seized the fish and threw
it up on the land.
[4] Then the angel said to him, "Cut open
the fish and take the heart and liver and gall and put
them away safely."
[5] So the young man did as the angel told him;
and they roasted and ate the fish. And they both
continued on their way until they came near to Ecbatana.
[6] Then the young man said to the angel,
"Brother Azarias, of what use is the liver and
heart and gall of the fish?"
[7] He replied, "As for the heart and liver,
if a demon or evil spirit gives trouble to any one, you
make a smoke from these before the man or woman, and
that person will never be troubled again.
[8] And as for the gall, anoint with it a man who
has white films in his eyes, and he will be cured."
[9] When they approached Ecbatana,
[10] the angel said to the young man,
"Brother, today we shall stay with Raguel. He is
your relative, and he has an only daughter named Sarah.
I will suggest that she be given to you in marriage,
[11] because you are entitled to her and to her
inheritance, for you are her only eligible kinsman.
[12] The girl is also beautiful and sensible. Now
listen to my plan. I will speak to her father, and as
soon as we return from Rages we will celebrate the
marriage. For I know that Raguel, according to the law
of Moses, cannot give her to another man without
incurring the penalty of death, because you rather than
any other man are entitled to the inheritance."
[13] Then the young man said to the angel,
"Brother Azarias, I have heard that the girl has
been given to seven husbands and that each died in the
bridal chamber.
[14] Now I am the only son my father has, and I
am afraid that if I go in I will die as those before me
did, for a demon is in love with her, and he harms no
one except those who approach her. So now I fear that I
may die and bring the lives of my father and mother to
the grave in sorrow on my account. And they have no
other son to bury them."
[15] But the angel said to him, "Do you not
remember the words with which your father commanded you
to take a wife from among your own people? Now listen to
me, brother, for she will become your wife; and do not
worry about the demon, for this very night she will be
given to you in marriage.
[16] When you enter the bridal chamber, you shall
take live ashes of incense and lay upon them some of the
heart and liver of the fish so as to make a smoke.
[17] Then the demon will smell it and flee away,
and will never again return. And when you approach her,
rise up, both of you, and cry out to the merciful God,
and he will save you and have mercy on you. Do not be
afraid, for she was destined for you from eternity. You
will save her, and she will go with you, and I suppose
that you will have children by her." When Tobias
heard these things, he fell in love with her and yearned
deeply for her.

[1]이 말을 듣고 토비트의 아내는
울음을 그쳤다.
[2]토비아와 라파엘은 길을 떠났다.
그 집의 개도 따라 나서서 그들과
동행하였다.
그 둘은 길을 가다가 밤이
되어 티그리스강 가에서 하룻밤을 묵게
되었다.
[3]토비아가 발을 씻으려고 물가에
내려 갔을 때에 커다란 물고기가 물에서
뛰어 올라 그 소년의 발을 잘라 먹으려고
하였다.
그래서 그는 소리를 질렀다.
[4]그 때에 천사가 소년에게 "그
물고기를 놓치지 말고 붙잡아라"
하고
말하였다.
토비아는그 물고기를 붙잡아
가지고 뭍으로 끌어올렸다.
[5]그러자 천사 라파엘이 말하였다.
"그 물고기의 배를 갈라서 쓸개와
염통과 간은 꺼내어 잘 보관하고 나머지
내장은 다 버려라.
그 쓸개와 염통과 간은
약으로 요긴하게 쓰일 것이다."
[6]토비아는 물고기의 배를 가르고
쓸개와 염통과 간을 따로 간수한 다음,
물고기의 일부분은 구워서 먹고 나머지는
소금에 절여 두었다.
그들 둘은 여행을
계속하여 마침내 메대 근처에 까지
이르렀다.
[7]그 때에 토비아가 천사 라파엘에게
"아지리아 형님,
이 물고기의 염통과
간과 쓸개는 도대체 무슨 약으로 쓰입니까?"
하고 묻자
[8]천사는 이렇게 대답하였다. "이
물고기의 염통과 간은 악마를 퇴치하는 데
쓰는 것이다.
악한 귀신이나 악령에
사로잡힌 남자 또는 여자 앞에서 그것들을
태워 연기를 피우면 그 악한 것들이 주던
괴로움이 깨끗이 사라지고 다시는 그
괴로움이 그 사람에게 돌아 오지 않는다.
[9]그리고 쓸개는,
그것을 흰막이
생긴 눈에 바르고 흰막에 닿도록 불어
넣으면 시력이 회복된단다."
[10]그들이 메대 땅에 들어 가
엑바타나에 이르렀을 때에
[11]라파엘이 "토비아"
하고
부르자 "왜 그러십니까?"
하고
토비아가 대답하였다.
라파엘이 이렇게
말하였다. "우리는 오늘 밤 라구엘 의
집에서 묵어야 하겠는데 그 사람은 네
친척이다.
그리고 그에게는 사라라는 딸이
있다.
[12]그의 자녀라고는 사라밖에 없다.
너는 사라의 가장 가까운 친척이니 만큼
어느 누구보다도 그 여자를 차지할 권리가
있고 그 아버지의 재산을 물려받을 자격이
있다.
그 여자는 영리하고 용감하고
대단히 아름다우며 그의 아버지도 훌륭한
분이다."
[13]라파엘은 계속하여 말했다. "너는
그 여자와 결혼할 자격이 있으니 내가
오늘 밤 그 여자의 아버지에게 그 여자를
네 신부로 데려 가게 해 달라고 청하겠다.
우리가 라게스에 갔다가 돌아와서
혼인잔치를 베풀도록 하자.
내가 알기에는
라구엘이 자기 딸과 네가 결혼하는 것을
막거나 그 딸을 다른 데 시집 보내는 일은
결코 할 수 없다.
누구보다도 네가 그의
딸을 차지할 자격이 있다는 것을 그가
알면서도 이행하지 않으면 모세 율법의
규정에 따라 사형을 면치 못할 것이다.
오늘 밤 라구엘에게 그 처녀에 관하여
상의를 하고 너와 그 처녀의 약혼식을
올리도록하자.
그리고 우리가 라게스에
갔다가 돌아 와서 그 여자를 데리고 네
집으로 함께 돌아 가자."
[14]그 때에 토비아가 라파엘에게
이렇게 대답하였다. "아자리아 형님,
나는 그 여자가 이미 일곱 번이나
결혼했었다는 말을 들었습니다.
그와
결혼한 남편들은 신방에서 모두
죽었다지요?
첫날밤 그 여자에게 가까이
가려다가 모두 죽었다면서요?
귀신이
그들을 죽였다는 소문도 들었습니다.
[15]나도 죽을까 겁이 납니다.
귀신이
그 여자는 해치지 않고 그 여자를
가까이하려는 남자만을 죽인답니다.
나는
우리 집안의 외아들입니다.
만일 내가
죽는다면 내 부모가 나 때문에 슬퍼하다가
지레 돌아가실 터이니 결국 내가 그들을
죽이는 셈이 될 것입니다.
내 부모에게는,
그들을 묻어 드릴 자식이 나밖에 없습니다."

하지 않을 것이다.
네가 그 여자와
동침하려 할 때에 우선 둘이서 함께
일어나 하늘에 계신 주님께 기도를 드리며
자비와 구원을 베풀어 주시기를
간구하여라.
그 여자는 네 아내로 정해져
있었고 네가 그 여자를 살려 내게 될
터이니 두려워 말아라.
그 여자는 너를
따라 가서 틀림없이 자녀를 많이 낳아 줄
것이다.
그러면 네 집안에 많은 형제가
생길 것이다.
자,
염려하지 말아라."
토비아는 라파엘의 말을 들어 사라가
자기의 동생뻘이 되고 자기 아버지 가문의
자손이라는 것을 알자 사라를 사랑하는
마음이 용솟음쳤고 그의 마음은
사라에게서 떠날 줄을 몰랐다.

[1] When they reached Ecbatana and arrived at the
house of Raguel, Sarah met them and greeted them. They
returned her greeting, and she brought them into the
house.
[2] Then Raguel said to his wife Edna, "How
much the young man resembles my cousin Tobit!"
[3] And Raguel asked them, "Where are you
from, brethren?" They answered him, "We belong
to the sons of Naphtali, who are captives in
Nineveh."
[4] So he said to them, "Do you know our
brother Tobit?" And they said, "Yes, we
do." And he asked them, "Is he in good
health?"
[5] They replied, "He is alive and in good
health." And Tobias said, "He is my
father."
[6] Then Raguel sprang up and kissed him and
wept.
[7] And he blessed him and exclaimed, "Son
of that good and noble man!" When he heard that
Tobit had lost his sight, he was stricken with grief and
wept.
[8] And his wife Edna and his daughter Sarah
wept. They received them very warmly; and they killed a
ram from the flock and set large servings of food before
them. Then Tobias said to Raphael, "Brother
Azarias, speak of those things which you talked about on
the journey, and let the matter be settled."
[9] So he communicated the proposal to Raguel.
And Raguel said to Tobias, "Eat, drink, and be
merry;
[10] for it is your right to take my child. But
let me explain the true situation to you.
[11] I have given my daughter to seven husbands,
and when each came to her he died in the night. But for
the present be merry." And Tobias said, "I
will eat nothing here until you make a binding agreement
with me."
[12] So Raguel said, "Take her right now, in
accordance with the law. You are her relative, and she
is yours. The merciful God will guide you both for the
best."
[13] Then he called his daughter Sarah, and
taking her by the hand he gave her to Tobias to be his
wife, saying, "Here she is; take her according to
the law of Moses, and take her with you to your
father." And he blessed them.
[14] Next he called his wife Edna, and took a
scroll and wrote out the contract; and they set their
seals to it.
[15] Then they began to eat.
[16] And Raguel called his wife Edna and said to
her, "Sister, make up the other room, and take her
into it."
[17] so she did as he said, and took her there;
and the girl began to weep. But the mother comforted her
daughter in her tears, and said to her,
[18] "Be brave, my child; the Lord of heaven
and earth grant you joy in place of this sorrow of
yours. Be brave, my daughter."

[1]토비아는 엑바타나에 도착하자
라파엘에게 "아자리아 형님,

토비아가 "제가 바로 그분의
아들입니다."

[6]라구엘은 벌떡 일어나 토비아에게
입을 맞추고 기쁨의 눈물을 흘리면서
이렇게 말하였다.
[7]"자네에게 하느님의 축복이
있기를 바라네.
자네는 훌륭하고 착한
분을 아버지로 모시고 있네.
그렇게 늘
자비를 베푸는 어른이 눈이 멀다니,
참으로 비참하기도 하지!"
라구엘은
자기 친척 토비아의 목을 끌어 안고
울었다.
[8]그의 아내 에드나도 울었고 그의
딸 사라도 따라 울었다.
[9]라구엘은 자기 양떼 중에서 수양
한 마리를 잡아,
그들을 융숭하게
대접하였다.
토비아와 라파엘이 몸과 손을
씻고 저녁을 먹으러 식탁에 둘러 앉았을
때 토비아는 라파엘에게 "아자리아

라구엘에게 말씀드려 내 친척

하고 부탁하였다.
[10]라구엘이 이 말을 엿듣고
토비아에게 이렇게 말하였다. "오늘
밤은 어서 먹고 마시며 즐기게.
자네는 내
가장 가까운 친척이야.
내 딸 사라를
아내로 맞을 자격이 있는 사람이 자네
말고 또 누가 있겠나.
사실 나는 내 딸 줄
권리가 없네.
그러나 자네에게 밝혀
두어야 할 사실이 있네.
[11]내 딸 사라를 동족에게 일곱
번이나 시집 보냈지만 첫날밤 신랑 들이
사라를 가까이 하려다가 모두 죽어 버렸네.
그러나 주께서 잘 보살펴주실 터이니,
어서 먹고 마시게"
토비아가 이 말을
듣고 "제 일을 결정지어 주시기 전에는
여기에서 제가 먹지도 않고 마시지도
않겠습니다."
하고 말하자 라구엘은
이렇게 대답하였다. "그렇게 하겠네.
모세 율법이 지시하는 대로 사라를
자네에게 주겠네.
사라가 자네 아내가
되는 것은 하늘이 이미 정해 놓은 일일세.
자네 친척 사라를 아내로 맞게.
이제부터
자네는 사라의 남편이 되고 사라는 자네의
아내가 되는 것일세.
오늘부터 사라는
영원히 자네 것일세.
하늘의 주님께서
오늘밤 자네들을 잘 돌보아 주실 것일세.
주님께서 자네들에게 자비와 평안을
베풀어 주시기를 비네."
[12]그리고 라구엘은 자기 딸 사라를
불렀다.
사라가 오자 그는 딸의 손을 잡고
딸을 토비아에게 넘겨 주며 이렇게
말하였다. "모세의 책에 기록되어 있는
율법과 규정에 따라 사라를 자네 아내로
주니,
아내로 맞이하여 아버지 계신
곳으로 잘 가게.
하늘에 계신 하느님께서
자네들의 갈 길을 잘 보살펴 주시기를
비네."
[13]라구엘은 사라의 어머니를 불러
종이를 가져오라고 하여다.
그리고 모세
율법의 규정에 따라 사라를 토비아에게
준다는 혼인계약서를 각성하였다.
[14]그리고 나서야 그들은 음식을
먹기 시작하였다.
[15]라구엘은 자기 아내 에드나를
불러서 "여보,
방을 하나 따로
마련하고 사라를 그리로 들여 보내시오"
하고 말하였다.
[16]에드나는 가서 남편의 지시대로
신방을 꾸미고 사라를 그리로 데리고 들어
갔다.
거기에서 딸의 신세를 생각하며
울다가 이렇게 말하였다.
[17]"얘야,
용기를 내어라.
하늘의
주님께서 네 슬픔을 거두어 주시고,
기쁨을 내려 주실 것이다.

용기를
내라."
이 말을 남기고 에드나는
방에서 나왔다.

[1] When they had finished eating, they escorted
Tobias in to her.
[2] As he went he remembered the words of
Raphael, and he took the live ashes of incense and put
the heart and liver of the fish upon them and made a
smoke.
[3] And when the demon smelled the odor he fled
to the remotest parts of Egypt, and the angel bound him.
[4] When the door was shut and the two were
alone, Tobias got up from the bed and said,
"Sister, get up, and let us pray that the Lord may
have mercy upon us."
[5] And Tobias began to pray, "Blessed art
thou, O God of our fathers,
and blessed be thy holy and glorious name for ever.
Let the heavens and all thy creatures bless thee.
[6] Thou madest Adam and gavest him Eve his wife
as a helper and support.
From them the race of mankind has sprung.
Thou didst say, `It is not good that the man should be
alone;
let us make a helper for him like himself.'
[7] And now, O Lord, I am not taking this sister
of mine because of lust, but with sincerity. Grant that
I may find mercy and may grow old together with
her."
[8] And she said with him, "Amen."
[9] Then they both went to sleep for the night.
But Raguel arose and went and dug a grave,
[10] with the thought, "Perhaps he too will
die."
[11] Then Raguel went into his house
[12] and said to his wife Edna, "Send one of
the maids to see whether he is alive; and if he is not,
let us bury him without any one knowing about it."
[13] So the maid opened the door and went in, and
found them both asleep.
[14] And she came out and told them that he was
alive.
[15] Then Raguel blessed God and said,
"Blessed art thou, O God, with every pure and holy
blessing.
Let thy saints and all thy creatures bless thee;
let all thy angels and thy chosen people bless thee for
ever.
[16] Blessed art thou, because thou hast made me
glad.
It has not happened to me as I expected;
but thou hast treated us according to thy great mercy.
[17] Blessed art thou, because thou hast had
compassion
on two only children.
Show them mercy, O Lord;
and bring their lives to fulfilment in health and
happiness and mercy."
[18] Then he ordered his servants to fill in the
grave.
[19] After this he gave a wedding feast for them
which lasted fourteen days.
[20] And before the days of the feast were over,
Raguel declared by oath to Tobias that he should not
leave until the fourteen days of the wedding feast were
ended,
[21] that then he should take half of Raguel's
property and return in safety to his father, and that
the rest would be his "when my wife and I
die."

싶은 생각이 들었다.
사람들이 신랑을

[3]그 물고기 냄새를 맡고 귀신은
에집트 땅 먼 곳까지 도망을 가 버렸다.
그
때에 라파엘은 그 귀신을 날쌔게 쫓아
가서 손발을 묶고 꼼짝도 못하게 해
놓았다.
[4]토비아를 데려다 준 사람들이
신방에서 나와 문을 닫자 토비아는
침대에서 일어나 사라에게 이렇게
말하였다. "여보,
일어나시오.
우리
주님께 기도 드리며 우리에게 자비와
구원을 내려 주시기를 간구합시다."
[5]사라가 일어나자 그들은 함께
기도를 드리며 그들을 구원해 주시기를
간구하기 시작하였다.
토비아는 이렇게
기도하였다. "우리 조상의 하느님,
찬양을 받으소서.
주님의 이름으로 하여금
영세무궁토록 찬미받게 하소서.
주님이
창조하신 하늘과 만물로 하여금 영원토록
찬양하게 하소서.
[6]주님은 아담을 창조하셨고,
그를
돕고 받들어 줄 아내로서 하와도
창조하셨습니다.
그 둘에게서 인종이
퍼졌습니다. '사람이 혼자 있는 것이 좋지
않으니,
그를 닮은 짝을 만들어 그를 돕게
하자'
하고 주님은 말씀하셨습니다.
[7]내가 지금 이 여자를 아내로 맞는
것은 음욕 때문에가 아니라,
하느님의
뜻을 참되게 이루기 위해서입니다.
나와
내 아내에게 자비를 베푸시어,
늙도록
함께 살게 해 주소서."
[8]그리고 나서야 그들은 그 밤을
지내기 위하여 잠자리에 들었다.
[9]라구엘은 밤중에 일어나 자기
하인들을 불러,
데리고 나가
[10]"신랑이 죽으면 우리는
사람들의 조롱과 비방을 면치 못할 것이다."
하면서 무덤을 팠다.
[11]무덤을 다 판 후에 라구엘은
집으로 돌아 가서 자기 아내를 불러,
[12]이렇게 말하였다. "하녀
하나를 들여 보내어 신랑이 살아 있는지
보고 오게 하시오.
그가 죽었으면 아무도
모르게 그를 묻어 버려야겠소."
[13]라구엘 부부는 등불을 켜 가지고
신방 문을 열고 하녀를 들여 보냈다.
하녀가 들어 가 보니 신혼부부는 둘 다
깊이 잠들어 있었다.
[14]하녀는 나와서,
토비아는 아무런
해도 입지 않고 살아 있다고 그들에게
보고하였다.
[15]이 보고를 들은 라구엘 부부는
하늘에 계신 하느님을 찬양하였다. "하느님,
찬미받으소서.
깨끗한 마음으로,
정성을
다하여 주님을 찬양합니다.
모든 사람으로
하여금 영원히 주님을 찬양하게하소서
[16]주님께서 나에게 기쁨을
주셨사오니 감사합니다.
내가 염려하던
일은 일어나지 않게 해 주셨고 도리어
주님은 놀라운 은총을 우리에게 베풀어
주셨습니다.
[17]주님께서 외아들과 외딸에게
자비를 베풀어 주셨사오니 감사합니다.
주님,
그들에게 자비와 구원을 베풀어
주시고 주님이 주시는 자비와 기쁨을
누리며 일생을 마치게 해 주소서."
[18]라구엘은 날이 밝기 전에 그
무덤을 메우라고 하인들에게 지시하였다.
[19]라구엘은 자기 아내에게 음식을
많이 장만하라고 이른 다음 목장으로 가서
황소 두 마리와 수양 네 마리를 끌어다가
하인들을 시켜 잡게 하였다.
하인들은
잔치 준비를 시작하였다.
[20]라구엘은 토비아를 불러 이렇게
말하였다. "자네는 열 나흘 동안
절대로 이 곳을 뜨지말고 여기 내 곁에
머물러 있으면서 먹고 마시게.
지금까지
모든 괴로움에 멍든 내 딸의 마음을
즐겁게 해주게
[21]내 재산의 절반을 당장 줄테니
자네 아버지에게 갈 때 잘 가지고 가게.
나머지 절반은 나와 내 아내가 죽은 다음
자네들 것이 될 걸세.
여보게 이사람,
씩씩하게 살아 가게.
나는 자네 아버지고
에드나는 자네 어머니일세.
사라가 우리
자네도 이제부터 영원히 우리 자식일세.

[1] Then Tobias called Raphael and said to him,
[2] "Brother Azarias, take a servant and two
camels with you and go to Gabael at Rages in Media and
get the money for me; and bring him to the wedding
feast.
[3] For Raguel has sworn that I should not leave;
[4] but my father is counting the days, and if I
delay long he will be greatly distressed."
[5] So Raphael made the journey and stayed over
night with Gabael. He gave him the receipt, and Gabael
brought out the money bags with their seals intact and
gave them to him.
[6] In the morning they both got up early and
came to the wedding feast. And Gabael blessed Tobias and
his wife.

벌떡 일어나 가바엘에게 인사를 하자
가바엘은 눈물을 흘리며 토비아를 축복해
주었다. "훌륭하고 착한 젊은이,
자네
아버지도 훌륭하고 착하고 올바른 자선가
이시네.
주님께서 하늘의 축복을 자네와
자네 아내와 자네 아버지와 자네 장모에게
내려 주시기를 비네.
하느님,
감사합니다.
내가 내 사촌 토비아를 만나니 그의
아버지 토비트를 만난 것 같습니다."

[1] Now his father Tobit was counting each day,
and when the days for the journey had expired and they
did not arrive,
[2] he said, "Is it possible that he has
been detained? Or is it possible that Gabael has died
and there is no one to give him the money?"
[3] And he was greatly distressed.
[4] And his wife said to him, "The lad has
perished; his long delay proves it." Then she began
to mourn for him, and said,
[5] "Am I not distressed, my child, that I
let you go, you who are the light of my eyes?"
[6] But Tobit said to her, "Be still and
stop worrying; he is well."
[7] And she answered him, "Be still and stop
deceiving me; my child has perished." And she went
out every day to the road by which they had left; she
ate nothing in the daytime, and throughout the nights
she never stopped mourning for her son Tobias, until the
fourteen days of the wedding feast had expired which
Raguel had sworn that he should spend there. At that
time Tobias said to Raguel, "Send me back, for my
father and mother have given up hope of ever seeing me
again."
[8] But his father-in-law said to him, "Stay
with me, and I will send messengers to your father, and
they will inform him how things are with you."
[9] Tobias replied, "No, send me back to my
father."
[10] So Raguel arose and gave him his wife Sarah
and half of his property in slaves, cattle, and money.
[11] And when he had blessed them he sent them
away, saying, "The God of heaven will prosper you,
my children, before I die."
[12] He said also to his daughter, "Honor
your father-in-law and your mother-in-law; they are now
your parents. Let me hear a good report of you. "
And he kissed her. And Edna said to Tobias, "The
Lord of heaven bring you back safely, dear brother, and
grant me to see your children by my daughter Sarah, that
I may rejoice before the Lord. See, I am entrusting my
daughter to you; do nothing to grieve her."

[1]한편 토비트는 자기 아들의 왕복
여행에 드는 날수를 날마다 계산하고
있었다.
그런데 그 날수가 다 차도 아들이
돌아 오지 않자,
[2]토비트는 "혹시 그 애가 거기에
붙들려 있는 것이 아닐까,
그렇지 않으면
가바엘이 죽어서 돈을 돌려 줄 사람이
없는 것이나 아닐까"
하면서
[3]근심하기 시작하였다.
[4]그의 아내 안나는 "그 애는
이제 죽어서 이 세상에는 없어요"
하며
울음을 터뜨렸다.
이렇게 자기 아들의
일로 애통해 하면서,
넋두리를 계속하였다.
[5]"아이고 내 신세야.
내 눈이
어두울 때 내 빛이 되어 줄 너를 어찌하여
내가 떠나 보냈던고!"

위로하였다. "여보,

잠을 이루지 못하는 것이었다.

자기 딸을 위하여 베풀어 주겠다고 맹세한
십 사일간의 혼인잔치가 끝나자 토비아는
자기 장인에게 가서 간청하였다. "이제는
저를 보내 주십시오.
틀림없이 집의
아버지와 어머니는 나를 다시 만나 보지
못할 줄로 생각하고 계실 것 같습니다.
그러니 아버님,
이제 제발 보내 주십시오.
집으로 돌아 가겠습니다.
제가 집을 떠나
올 때의 사정은 이미 다 말씀드리지

[8]그러나 라구엘은 토비아에게 "여보게,

춘부장께는 사람을 보내어 자네 소식을
전해 드리겠네"
하고 말하였다.
[9]토비아는 "결코 그럴 수는
없습니다.
어서 집으로 가야겠으니 제발
여기를 떠나게 해 주십시오"

대답하였다.
[10]그러자 라구엘은 서슴지 않고
토비아에게 그의 신부 사라를 내어 줄 뿐
아니라 남종과 여종,
소와 양,
나귀와 낙타,
옷과 돈과 그릇 등 자기 재산의 절반을
나누어 주었다.
[11]그리고 무사히 지내던 토비아
일행을 떠나 보내며 그를 끌어 않고
이렇게 말하였다. "여보게,
잘 가게.
아무탈없이 돌아 가기를 바라네.
하늘에
계신 주님께서 자네 아내 사라를 잘
돌보아 주시기를 비네.
내가 죽기 전에
자네들이 낳은 보게 되었으면."
[12]그리고 나서 자기 딸 사라에게도
이렇게 말하였다. "너는 이제 네
시댁으로 가야 한다.
이제부터 시부모는
너를 낳은 우리들과 똑같은 부모님이시다.
얘야,
잘 가거라.
내가 살아 있는 동안
너에게서 희소식이 들려 오기를 바란다."
그는 끌어 안고 인사를 나눈 다음 그들을
떠나 보냈다.
[13]그 때에 에드나도 토비아에게
말하였다. "자네는 내 사랑하는
자식이고 사위일세.
주님께서 자네를
무사히 집으로 돌아가게 해 주시기를 비네.
내가 죽기 전에 자네와 내 딸 사라
사이에서 태어난 자식들을 보게 되기를
바라네.
내가 주님 앞에서 내 자네에게
맡기니 잘 보살펴 주게.
평생토록 내 딸을
슬프게 해 주지 말게.

기분으로 라구엘을 떠나 가며 자기의
여행을 성과 있게 해주신 천지의
주재이시며 만물의 왕이신 하느님을
찬양하였다.
마지막으로 라구엘이
토비아에게 한 말은 이러하였다. "자네가
주님의 축복을 받아,
자네 부모의 여생을
기쁘게 해 드릴 수 있기를 나는 비네."

[1] After this Tobias went on his way, praising
God because he had made his journey a success. And he
blessed Raguel and his wife Edna. So he continued on his
way until they came near to Nineveh.
[2] Then Raphael said to Tobias, "Are you
not aware, brother, of how you left your father?
[3] Let us run ahead of your wife and prepare the
house.
[4] And take the gall of the fish with you."
So they went their way, and the dog went along behind
them.
[5] Now Anna sat looking intently down the road
for her son.
[6] And she caught sight of him coming, and said
to his father, "Behold, your son is coming, and so
is the man who went with him!"
[7] Raphael said, "I know, Tobias, that your
father will open his eyes.
[8] You therefore must anoint his eyes with the
gall; and when they smart he will rub them, and will
cause the white films to fall away, and he will see
you."
[9] Then Anna ran to meet them, and embraced her
son, and said to him, "I have seen you, my child;
now I am ready to die." And they both wept.
[10] Tobit started toward the door, and stumbled.
But his son ran to him
[11] and took hold of his father, and he
sprinkled the gall upon his father's eyes, saying,
"Be of good cheer, father."
[12] And when his eyes began to smart he rubbed
them,
[13] and the white films scaled off from the
corners of his eyes.
[14] Then he saw his son and embraced him, and he
wept and said, "Blessed art thou, O God, and
blessed is thy name for ever, and blessed are all thy
holy angels.
[15] For thou hast afflicted me, but thou hast
had mercy upon me; here I see my son Tobias!" And
his son went in rejoicing, and he reported to his father
the great things that had happened to him in Media.
[16] Then Tobit went out to meet his
daughter-in-law at the gate of Nineveh, rejoicing and
praising God. Those who saw him as he went were amazed
because he could see.
[17] And Tobit gave thanks before them that God
had been merciful to him. When Tobit came near to Sarah
his daughter-in-law, he blessed her, saying,
"Welcome, daughter! Blessed is God who has brought
you to us, and blessed are your father and your
mother." So there was rejoicing among all his
brethren in Nineveh.
[18] Ahikar and his nephew Nadab came, and Tobias' marriage was celebrated for
seven days with great festivity.

[1]토비아의 일행이 니느웨의

[4]라파엘은 이어서 토비아에게,

물고기의 쓸개를 손에 들고 가라고 말한

그들과 함께 여행을 떠났던 개도 라파엘과
토비아의 뒤를 따랐다.
[5]한편 토비아의 어머니 안나는
주저앉아서 자기 아들이 떠나 가던 길을

[6]그러다가 토비아가 오는 것을 보고
남편 토비트에게 "저기 당신 아들이
옵니다.
함께 갔던 사람도 옵니다."
하고 소리질렀다.
[7]토비아가 자기 아버지에게 가까이
가기 전에 라파엘은 이렇게 말하였다.
"틀림없이 네 아버지는 다시 눈을 떠
보게 될 것이다.
[8]그 물고기의 쓸개를 아버지 눈에
발라 드려라.
그러면 그 약이 아버지 눈의
흰막을 줄어들게 하고 마침내는 없애 버릴
것이다.
그래서 네 아버지는 시력을
되찾아 빛을 보게 될 것이다."
[9]안나는 앞으로 달려 나가 아들의
목을 얼싸 안고 "얘야,
내가 너를 다시
만났으니 이제는 죽어도 한이 없겠다"
하면서 눈물을 흘렸다.
[10]토비트도 일어서서 허둥거리며
대문 밖으로 나갔다.
[11]토비아는 물고기의 쓸개를 손에
든 채 아버지에게 달려 가 아버지의 눈에
입김을 불어 넣어 드렸다.
그리고
아버지의 팔을 붙잡고 "아버지,
기운을
내십시오"
하고 말하며 그 약을 눈에
발라 드린 다음,
[12]양손으로 아버지의 눈
구석에서부터 흰막을 벗겨 내었다.
[13]그 때에 토비트는 아들의 목을
얼싸 안고 "네가 보이는구나,
내가
눈이 멀었을 때 눈노릇을 해 주던 네가!"
하고 말하였다.
[14]그리고 이어서 다음과 같이
감사하였다. "하느님,
찬미받으소서.
주님의 크신 이름과 모든 거룩한 천사들이
찬미를 받아 마땅 합니다.
주님께서
우리와 함께 계시고 모든 천사들이
영원토록 찬미 받으시기를 비옵니다.
[15]주님은 저를 채찍으로 치셨으나
이제 저는 제 눈으로 아들 토비아를
봅니다."
토비아는 기쁨에 넘쳐 소리
높이 하느님을 찬양하며 집으로 들어갔다.
그리고 토비아는 하느님의 돌보심으로
자기 여행에 큰 성 있었다는 것과
라구엘의 딸 사라를 아내로 얻게 된
경위와 자기 아내도 같이 오는데 니느웨
성문 가까이 당도했으리라는 것을
아버지께 보고하였다.
[16]토비트는 기쁨에 넘쳐 하느님을
찬양하면서 자기 며느리를 맞으러 니느웨
성문으로 나갔다.
니느웨 사람들은
토비트가 아무의 도움도 받지 않고 혼자서
성큼성큼 걸어 나오는 것을 보고 깜짝
놀랐다.
[17]그 때 토비트는 하느님께서
자비를 베푸셔서 눈을 뜨게 해 주셨다는
사실을 그들 앞에서 분명히 말하였다.
토비트는 토비아의 아내 사라에게 가까이
가서 그를 축복하며 이렇게 말하였다.
"악아,
어서 오너라.
너를 우리에게
인도해 주신 네 하느님께 찬미를 드리자.
네 아버지와 내 아들 토비아와 또 너에게
하느님의 축복이 있기를 빈다.
악아,
어서
집으로 들어 가자.
그리고 평안과 축복과
기쁨을 누려라."
그날 니느웨에 사는
모든 유다인들이 다같이 기뻐하였다.
[18]그리고 토비트의 조카 아히카르와
나답도 그 집에 찾아 와서 기쁨을
나누었다.

[1] Tobit then called his son Tobias and said to
him, "My son, see to the wages of the man who went
with you; and he must also be given more."
[2] He replied, "Father, it would do me no
harm to give him half of what I have brought back.
[3] For he has led me back to you safely, he
cured my wife, he obtained the money for me, and he also
healed you."
[4] The old man said, "He deserves it."
[5] So he called the angel and said to him,
"Take half of all that you two have brought
back."
[6] Then the angel called the two of them
privately and said to them: "Praise God and give
thanks to him; exalt him and give thanks to him in the
presence of all the living for what he has done for you.
It is good to praise God and to exalt his name, worthily
declaring the works of God. Do not be slow to give him
thanks.
[7] It is good to guard the secret of a king, but
gloriously to reveal the works of God. Do good, and evil
will not overtake you.
[8] Prayer is good when accompanied by fasting,
almsgiving, and righteousness. A little with
righteousness is better than much with wrongdoing. It is
better to give alms than to treasure up gold.
[9] For almsgiving delivers from death, and it
will purge away every sin. Those who perform deeds of
charity and of righteousness will have fulness of life;
[10] but those who commit sin are the enemies of
their own lives.
[11] "I will not conceal anything from you.
I have said, `It is good to guard the secret of a king,
but gloriously to reveal the works of God.'
[12] And so, when you and your daughter-in-law
Sarah prayed, I brought a reminder of your prayer before
the Holy One; and when you buried the dead, I was
likewise present with you.
[13] When you did not hesitate to rise and leave
your dinner in order to go and lay out the dead, your
good deed was not hidden from me, but I was with you.
[14] So now God sent me to heal you and your
daughter-in-law Sarah.
[15] I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels
who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the
presence of the glory of the Holy One."
[16] They were both alarmed; and they fell upon
their faces, for they were afraid.
[17] But he said to them, "Do not be afraid;
you will be safe. But praise God for ever.
[18] For I did not come as a favor on my part,
but by the will of our God. Therefore praise him for
ever.
[19] All these days I merely appeared to you and
did not eat or drink, but you were seeing a vision.
[20] And now give thanks to God, for I am
ascending to him who sent me. Write in a book everything
that has happened."
[21] Then they stood up; but they saw him no
more.
[22] So they confessed the great and wonderful
works of God, and acknowledged that the angel of the
Lord had appeared to them.

[1]혼인잔치가 다 끝나자 토비트는
토비아를 불러 이렇게 말하였다. "얘야,
너와 함께 갔던 그 사람에게 보수를
어김없이 드리도록 하여라.
그리고 정한
보수 외에도 좀더 얹어 드리기를 잊지
말아라."
[2]토비아가 아버지에게 말하였다.
"아버지,
그 사람에게 보수를 얼마나
드리는 것이 좋겠습니까?
그 사람의
덕분으로 내가 가져오게 된 재산의 절반을
그에게 드려도 나는 아깝지 않겠습니다.
[3]나를 무사하게 인도하고 내 아내의
액운을 면케 해 주고 나를 도와서 그 돈도
찾아 올 수 있게 해 주고 또 아버지의 눈도
뜨게 해 준 분이 바로 그분이 아닙니까?
그러니 그에게 보수를 얼마나 더 드려야
하겠습니까?"
[4]토비트는 자기 아들에게 "얘야,
그가 가져다 준 모든 것의 절반을 그가
차지한다는 것은 당연한 일이다."
하고
대답하였다.
[5]토비아는 라파엘을 불러 "형님께서
가져다 주신 모든 것의 절반을 보수로
드리니 받으시고 안녕히 가십시오"
하고 말하였다.
[6]그러자 라파엘은 토비트와
토비아를 조용히 불러 다음과 같이
말하였다. "하느님께서 두 분에게
그토록 많은 은총을 베풀어 주셨으니,
하느님을 찬양하고 살아 있는 모든 사람
앞에서 하느님께 감사하기를 게을리하지
마시오.
[7]세상 임금의 비밀은 감추는 것이
좋습니다.
그러나,
하느님의 업적은
드러내어 세상에 알리는 것이 좋으며 또
하느님께 영광을 돌려야 합니다.
두
분께서는 좋은 일을 하십시오.
그러면 두
분에게는 불행이 닥치지 않을 것입니다.
[8]옳지 못한 방법으로 부자가 되는
것보다는 진실한 마음으로 기도를 드리고
올바른 마음으로 자선을 행하는 것이
좋습니다.
황금을 쌓아 두는 것보다는
자선을 행하는 것이 더 좋은 일입니다.
[9]자선은 사람을 죽음에서 건져 내고
모든 죄를 깨끗이 없애 버립니다.
자선을
행하는 사람은 장수하게 될 것입니다.
[10]죄를 짓고 옳지 않은 일을 행하는
사람은 자기 자신을 파멸시키는
사람입니다.
[11]나는 이제 두 분에게 아무 것도
숨기지 않고 사실을 다 말씀 드리겠습니다.
나는 아까 두 분에게 세상 임금의 비밀은
감추지 것이 좋고 하느님의 업적은
드러내는 것이 좋다고 분명히 말씀
드렸습니다.
[12]당신 토비트가 기도할 때와 또
사라가 기도할 대 그 기도를 듣고
영광스런 주님께 그 기도를 전해 드린
것이 바로 나였습니다.
그리고 당신이
죽은 사람을 묻어 주었을 때에도 내가 그
사실을 하느님께 보고드렸습니다.
[13]언젠가 당신이 잔치자리를 박차고
서슴지 않고 일어나 나가서 시체를 묻어
주던 날,
당신을 시험하기 위해 파견된
자도 바로 나였습니다.
[14]또 당신의 눈을 뜨게 하고 당신의
며느리 사라의 액운을 면케 해주려고
하느님께서 보낸 자도 바로 나입니다.
[15]나는 영광스런 주님을 시중드는
일곱 천사 중의 하나인 라파엘 입니다."
[16]이 말을 들은 그 두 사람은
당황하다 못해 겁에 질려 그 천사 앞에
엎드렸다.
[17]그러나 라파엘은 그들에게 다음과
같이 말하였다. "두려워하지 말고
안심하시오.
영원토록 하느님을
찬양하시오.
내가 당신들과
[18]함께 있었지만 그것은 하느님께서
시키셔서 한 것이고 나 자신의 호의에서
한 것은 아니었습니다.
그러니 언제나
당신들의 찬양과 찬미를 받으실 분은
하느님이십니다.
[19]당신들은 내가 먹고 마시는 것을
보았지만 내가 정말 먹은 것은 아닙니다.
그저 그렇게 보였을 뿐입니다.
[20]주 하느님을 찬양하고 감사를
드리시오.
나는 나를 보내신 분에게로
올라 갑니다.
당신들에게 일어난 일들을
낱낱이 기록하시오."
이 말을 남기고
라파엘은 하늘로 올라 갔다.
[21]토비트와 토비아가 일어나 보니
라파엘의 모습은 보이지 않았다.
[22]하느님께서 당신의 천사를
보내시어 그 놀라운 일들을 보여 주신데
대하여 그들은 찬양과 찬미와 감사를
드렸다.

[1] Then Tobit wrote a prayer of rejoicing, and
said: "Blessed is God who lives for ever,
and blessed is his kingdom.
[2] For he afflicts, and he shows mercy;
he leads down to Hades, and brings up again,
and there is no one who can escape his hand.
[3] Acknowledge him before the nations, O sons of
Israel;
for he has scattered us among them.
[4] Make his greatness known there,
and exalt him in the presence of all the living;
because he is our Lord and God,
he is our Father for ever.
[5] He will afflict us for our iniquities;
and again he will show mercy,
and will gather us from all the nations
among whom you have been scattered.
[6] If you turn to him with all your heart and
with all your soul,
to do what is true before him,
then he will turn to you
and will not hide his face from you.
But see what he will do with you;
give thanks to him with your full voice.
Praise the Lord of righteousness,
and exalt the King of the ages.
I give him thanks in the land of my captivity,
and I show his power and majesty to a nation of sinners.
Turn back, you sinners, and do right before him;
who knows if he will accept you and have mercy on you?
[7] I exalt my God;
my soul exalts the King of heaven,
and will rejoice in his majesty.

[9] O Jerusalem, the holy city,
he will afflict you for the deeds of your sons,
but again he will show mercy to the sons of the

that his tent may be raised for you again with joy.
May he cheer those within you who are captives,
and love those within you who are distressed,
to all generations for ever.
[11] Many nations will come from afar to the name
of the Lord God,
bearing gifts in their hands, gifts for the King of
heaven.
Generations of generations will give you joyful praise.
[12] Cursed are all who hate you;
blessed for ever will be all who love you.
[13] Rejoice and be glad for the sons of the
righteous;
for they will be gathered together,
and will praise the Lord of the righteous.
[14] How blessed are those who love you!
They will rejoice in your peace.
Blessed are those who grieved over all your afflictions;
for they will rejoice for you upon seeing all your
glory,
and they will be made glad for ever.
[15] Let my soul praise God the great King.
[16] For Jerusalem will be built with sapphires
and emeralds,
her walls with precious stones,
and her towers and battlements with pure gold.
[17] The streets of Jerusalem will be paved with
beryl and ruby and stones of Ophir;
[18] all her lanes will cry `Hallelujah!' and
will give praise,
saying, `Blessed is God, who has exalted you for

[1] Here Tobit ended his words of praise.
[2] He was fifty-eight years old when he lost his
sight, and after eight years he regained it. He gave
alms, and he continued to fear the Lord God and to
praise him.
[3] When he had grown very old he called his son
and grandsons, and said to him, "My son, take your
sons; behold, I have grown old and am about to depart
this life.
[4] Go to Media, my son, for I fully believe what
Jonah the prophet said about Nineveh, that it will be
overthrown. But in Media there will be peace for a time.
Our brethren will be scattered over the earth from the
good land, and Jerusalem will be desolate. The house of
God in it will be burned down and will be in ruins for a
time.
[5] But God will again have mercy on them, and
bring them back into their land; and they will rebuild
the house of God, though it will not be like the former
one until the times of the age are completed. After this
they will return from the places of their captivity, and
will rebuild Jerusalem in splendor. And the house of God
will be rebuilt there with a glorious building for all
generations for ever, just as the prophets said of it.
[6] Then all the Gentiles will turn to fear the
Lord God in truth, and will bury their idols.
[7] All the Gentiles will praise the Lord, and
his people will give thanks to God, and the Lord will
exalt his people. And all who love the Lord God in truth
and righteousness will rejoice, showing mercy to our
brethren.
[8] "So now, my son, leave Nineveh, because
what the prophet Jonah said will surely happen.
[9] But keep the law and the commandments, and be
merciful and just, so that it may be well with you.
[10] Bury me properly, and your mother with me.
And do not live in Nineveh any longer. See, my son, what
Nadab did to Ahikar who had reared him, how he brought
him from light into darkness, and with what he repaid
him. But Ahikar was saved, and the other received
repayment as he himself went down into the darkness.
Ahikar gave alms and escaped the deathtrap which Nadab
had set for him; but Nadab fell into the trap and
perished.
[11] So now, my children, consider what
almsgiving accomplishes and how righteousness
delivers." As he said this he died in his bed. He
was a hundred and fifty-eight years old; and Tobias gave
him a magnificent funeral.
[12] And when Anna died he buried her with his
father. Then Tobias returned with his wife and his sons
to Ecbatana, to Raguel his father-in-law.
[13] He grew old with honor, and he gave his
father-in-law and mother-in-law magnificent funerals. He
inherited their property and that of his father Tobit.
[14] He died in Ecbatana of Media at the age of a
hundred and twenty-seven years.
[15] But before he died he heard of the
destruction of Nineveh, which Nebuchadnezzar and
Ahasuerus had captured. Before his death he rejoiced
over Nineveh.

[4]메대로 피신하여라.
나훔을 시켜
니느웨를 두고 예언하신 하느님의 말씀을
나는 믿는다.
그 예언이 그대로 이루어질
것이고,
하느님께서 보내신 이스라엘의
예언자들이 아시리아와 니느웨를 두고
예언한 모든 것이 그대로 이루어질 것이다.
그러니 아시리아나 바빌론에 있는
것보다는 메대에 가 있는 것이 더 안전할
것이다.
하느님께서 하신 말씀은 모두 다
이루어 지리라는 것을 나는 알고 또
믿는다.
그 말씀은 한 마디도 실패로 돌아
가지 않고 다 실현될 것이다.
이스라엘
땅에 사는 우리 동족들이 모두 포로가
되어 그 좋은 땅에서 추방되어 흩어질
것이고 이스라엘 땅은 온통 황무지가 될
것이다.
사마리아도 이스라엘도 황무지가
될 것이고 하느님의 전은 불에 타 버리고
당분간 슬픔에 잠길 것이다.
[5]그러나 하느님께서는 그들에게
다시 자비를 베푸시고 이스라엘 땅으로
되돌아 오게 하시고 성전도 재건하게 하실
것이다.
이스라엘 사람들이
포로생활로부터 돌아 와 예루살렘을
찬란하게 재건할 것이고,
이스라엘의
예언자들이 예언한 대로 하느님의 성전도
그 곳에 세울 것이다.
[6]땅에 사는 모든 민족이 마음을
돌이켜 진심으로 하느님을 공경할 것이며,
그들을 속여 그릇된 길로 인도하던
우상들을 버리고 올바른 길을 걸으며
영원하신 하느님을 찬양할 것이다.
[7]그 때까지 살아 남아 진정으로
하느님께 충성을 바치는 이스라엘의 모든
백성은 다 함께 예루살렘으로 모여 와
아브라함의 땅을 차지하고 영원토록
안전하게 살 것이다.
하느님을 진정으로
사랑하는 사람들은 기뻐할 것이고 죄와
악을 행하는 자들은 온 땅에서 자취를
감출 것이다.
[8]얘들아,
내 명령을 잘 들어라.
너희는 하느님을 진심으로 섬기고
하느님께서 기뻐하시는 일을 행하여라,.
너희의 자녀들을 잘 가르쳐서 올바른 일과
자선을 행하게 하고 하느님을 기억하며
언제나 힘을 다하여 참되게 하느님의
이름을 찬양하게 하여라.
[9]얘 토비아야,
여기 니느웨에
머물러 있지 말고 떠나거라.
[10]네 어머니까지 죽어 내 무덤에
합장한 다음에는 하루도 이 곳에 지체하지
말고 떠나거라.
내가 보니 이 곳에는
부정부패와 사기횡령이 판을 치고
있는데도 누구 하나 부끄럽게 생각하는
사람이 없다.
얘야,
나답이 아히카르에게
한 일을 생각해 보아라.
아히카르가
나답에게 생매장을 당할 뻔하지 않았느냐?
나답이 아히카르를 죽이려 했기 때문에
하느님께서는 그를 영원한 어둠 속에 몰아
넣으시어 불명예스러운 이름을 남기게
하셨으며 아히카르는 살리시어 광명을
보게 하셨다.
아히카르는 자선을
행하였으며 나답이 그를 죽이려고 만들어
놓은 죽음의 올무에서 빠져 나왔고 나답은
바로 그 올무에 걸려 자멸하고 말았다.
[11]그러니 얘들아,
자선의 결과가
무엇인지,
악의 결과가 무엇인지 잘 알아
두어라.
악의 결과는 죽음이다.
이제 내
숨이 끊어지려 하는 구나."
그들이
토비트를 침상에 누이자 그는 숨을
거두었다.
그의 장례식은 성대하게
거행되었다.
[12]그 후 토비아의 어머니가 죽자
토비아는 어머니를 아버지 무덤에
합장하고 자기 아내와 함께 메대로 가
엑바타나에서 장인 라구엘과 함께 살았다.
[13]토비아는 늙은 장인 장모를 잘
모시다가 메대의 엑바타나에 그들을
묻었다.
이리하여 토비아는 자기 아버지
토비트의 재산뿐 아니라 라구엘의 집도
유산으로 물려받았다.
[14]토비아는 백십 칠 세르 일기로
영광스러운 그의 일생을 마쳤다.
[15]그는 죽기에 앞서 니느웨가
멸망하였다는 소식을 들었고 메대의
왕아하스에로스가 사로잡은 포로들이
메대로 끌려 오는 광경을 보았다.
그리고
그는 하느님께서 니느웨와 아시리아
백성들에게 행하신 모든 일을 보고
하느님을 찬양하였다.
이렇게 토비아는
죽기 전에 니느웨가 당한 운명을 생각하여
기뻐하였으며 영원히 살아 계시는 주
하느님을 찬양하였다.
