Shu Ching

서경 (書經)

The Shu Ching consists of 58 chapters. Of these, 33 (originally 29, but some chapters have been divided), called the "modern script" text, are considered by most scholars to be authentic works of the 4th century BC or earlier. The first five chapters of the Shu Ching purport to preserve the sayings and recall the deeds of such illustrious emperors as Yao and Shun, who reigned during China's legendary golden age. Chapters six to nine are devoted to the Hsia dynasty (c. 2205-c. 1766 BC), the historicity of which has not been definitively established. The next 17 chapters deal with the Shang dynasty and its collapse in 1122 BC. The blame for this is placed on the last Shang ruler, who is described as oppressive, murderous, extravagant, and lustful. The final 32 chapters cover the Hsi (Western) Chou dynasty that ruled China until 771 BC.

서경 (書經), (병)Shu Jing (웨)Shu Ching. 중국 유가 5경(五經) 가운데 하나. 

〈상서 尙書〉라고도 한다. 〈서경〉의 일부는 후대에 쓰였다고 밝혀졌지만 이 부분을 제외한 나머지는 중국에서 가장 오래된 역사서이다. 〈서경〉은 모두 58편으로 이루어져 있는데, 그중 33편을 〈금문상서 今文尙書〉라 부르고 나머지 25편을 〈고문상서 古文尙書〉라 한다. 〈금문상서〉는 원래 29편이었지만 일부를 분할하여 편수가 늘어났다. 대부분의 학자들은 이것을 BC 4세기 이전에 작성된 진본으로 생각하고 있다. 〈고문상서〉는 원래 16편으로 이루어져 있었지만 오래전에 소실되었다. 4세기에 나타난 모작(模作)은 원본의 제목을 붙인 16편에 9편을 더하여 모두 25편으로 이루어져 있다.

처음의 5편은 중국의 전설적인 태평시대에 나라를 다스렸다는 유명한 요(堯)·순(舜)의 말과 업적을 기록한 것이다. 6~9편은 하(夏：BC 2205경~1766경)나라에 대한 기록이지만 역사적으로는 아직 명확히 밝혀지지 않고 있다. 그 다음 17편은 은(殷)나라의 건국과 몰락(BC 1122)에 대한 기록인데, 은나라의 멸망을 마지막 왕인 주왕(紂王)이 타락한 탓으로 돌리고 있다. 주왕은 포악하고 잔인하며 사치스럽고 음탕한 인물로 묘사되어 있다. 마지막 32편은 BC 771년까지 중국을 다스렸던 서주(西周)에 대해 기록하고 있다.
