   I am currently in the military, what should  do?

나는 군대에 복무하고 있다, 어떻게 해야 하는가?

 If you currently serve in the US military you have taken an oath that states:

"I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." (Department of Defense Form 4/2, Aug 1998).

     This oath requires that you invoke God's name as a part of your swearing to kill, as ordered, any deemed as a threat by the State, even fellow citizens of this country. You vow to bear "true faith and allegiance" to an entity other than God. You vow to kill anyone that your government orders you to kill. Failure to do so will result in you receiving a court martial.

     Knowing what you now know...can you keep this oath in good faith? Can you kill anyone that your government identifies as an "enemy" even if that individual does not pose a threat in your estimation? Can you bear arms against other countrymen and even other Christians, on the grounds that the Church and State has given you authority to do so? Can you of clear conscience participate in any war that bombs civilian populations? Can you be a part of an organization that sole purpose of existing is to foment death and destruction? 

     One must ask oneself, "Am I bound to keep this pledge?" No, at the point that you discover that you made a pledge that is contradictory to the expressed will of God, that pledge is no longer binding. Often we make pledges that do not act in our best interests, or in the best interests of others. Upon that point where we discover we have made a pledge in error...the greater error is to fulfill that pledge. True honor is admitting our mistakes and then working to correct them. It was a mistake to pledge allegiance to the State in full contradiction to our pledge of allegiance to God. But this error can be rectified for the betterment of all.  

     The most courageous act you can take is to walk into the officer of your Chaplain and say "I can no longer serve in the military, I wish to declare myself as a conscientious objector. If ordered to fight, I will refuse that order." You may invite hardship, and incur disdain for those about you, but in your declaration you save the lives of others, and even you own. Jesus said:

"For whosoever loses his life for my sake shall find it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his soul, for what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Matthew 16:25-26

     Life, is very, very short. We must be certain that we make the right choices, for it is the consequences of the choices we have made that we carry with us beyond the grave and before the judgment seat of Christ. The choice of peace at your own personal sacrifice, is the right choice. When you choose peace, you will sacrifice your comfort for another's life and well being, just as Jesus sacrificed His comfort, and life for you. This, is why we know it is the right decision.
