The soldiers of the
world are so for many reasons. Some are pacifists, but because the penalties for
non cooperation with the State are so severe they feel they must comply. How can
we judge one, such as this, until we are in their shoes. In the US to resist the
draft may result in mild civil penalties and social ostracizing. In other
countries, to resist the draft means long, harsh prison sentences. Other soldiers
are in the military to escape extreme poverty or to gain education benefits that
are awarded after term of service is completed. There are many reasons why a
young man or woman would choose the life of the soldier and not among them is to
kill and wreck havoc, unless such an individual is a psychopath and in which
case is a danger to society irregardless of their profession.

The Christian pacifist would never consider the professional soldier to be an
evil individual any more than he/she would consider anyone evil who does not
believe as the pacifist does. Our approach is the same approach of Christ when
He dealt with soldiers (Matthew 8:5-13; Luke 7:1-10), He treated them with
dignity and respect. We believe pacifism is worthy of believe and
practice by all, but mandatory by none. We extend the love of Christ though
pacifism to all of His creation. We respect, and even understand the choice of
one to be a soldier, and all we ask is the same courtesy be extended to the
those who choose to live out the teachings of Christ in regards to pacifism.
