파울러 H(enry) W(atson) Fowler. 1858. 3. 10 잉글랜드 켄트 턴브리지~1933. 12. 26 서머싯 힌턴세인트조지. 영국의 사전편찬가•언어학자. 영어의 형태와 용법에 관한 그의 연구는 영어학에 막대한 영향력을 끼쳤다. 매우 도덕적이고 박식한 인물이었으며 그의 재치와 고상한 인품이 그가 쓴 모든 글 속에 잘 나타나 있다.

Fowler, H(enry) W(atson) (b. March 10, 1858, Tonbridge, Kent, Eng.--d. Dec. 26, 1933, Hinton St. George, Somerset), English lexicographer and philologist whose works on the use and style of the English language had far-reaching influence. He was a man of moral and intellectual strength whose wit and grace were evident throughout his writings.

파울러는 옥스퍼드대학교의 베일리얼 칼리지 (1886 학사•석사학위)에서 수학한 후 1899년까지 세드버그 학교에서 교편을 잡았다. 1899~1903년에는 런던에 거주하며 약간의 유산과 잡지에 글을 기고하여 얻은 수입으로 생활했다. 그후 채널 제도의 건지 섬으로 이주하여 동생인 프랜시스 조지 파울러와 함께 출판업을 시작했다. 이들 형제가 제작한 최초의 작품은 4권으로 된 번역서 〈루키아누스 작품집 The Works of Lucian of Samosata〉(1905)이며, 그뒤를 이어 〈왕의 영어 The King's English〉(1906)•〈콘사이스 옥스퍼드 현대 영어사전 The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English〉(1911) 등이 출판되었다. 제1차 세계대전이 발발하자 군복무 때문에 이들의 출판활동은 중단되었는데, 동생인 조지 파울러는 결핵에 걸려 1918년에 죽었다. 전쟁이 끝나고 건지 섬으로 되돌아온 파울러는 1924년 〈옥스퍼드 현대영어 포켓 사전 The Pocket Oxford Dictionary of Current English〉을 출판하고, 그 이듬해 서머싯 주에 있는 힌턴세인트조지로 이주했다. |
Fowler was educated at Balliol College, Oxford (B.A. and M.A., 1886), and taught at Sedbergh School until 1899. He lived in London from 1899 to 1903, supporting himself with a small inheritance and the income from essays published in journals. He then moved to Guernsey in the Channel Islands and began his collaboration with his younger brother Francis George Fowler. The brothers' first work was a four-volume translation, The Works of Lucian of Samosata (1905), followed by The King's English (1906) and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English (1911). Their work was interrupted by military service during World War I; Francis George died of tuberculosis in 1918. After the war H.W. Fowler returned to Guernsey and in 1924 published The Pocket Oxford Dictionary of Current English. The following year he moved to the village of Hinton St. George.

Fowler's major work, planned with his brother, was A Dictionary of Modern English Usage (1926). It is an alphabetical listing of points of grammar, syntax, style, pronunciation, and punctuation. The depth, style, and humour of the work have made it a classic of English philology. Among Fowler's other writings are a collection of essays, If Wishes Were Horses (1929), and a volume of poetry, Rhymes of Darby to Joan (1931).
